The reckoning

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just FYI here the just under 1/2 inch osb was 10.40ish and the just over half inch osb was 14.47 so maybe not that much but still enough to make me go with thinner around but on top I have to admit that I still wanted thicker wood after standing at the store and looking at it all.

If it were me, I would go ahead and use 3/4. You probably dont need it but its not that much more expensive and if your going to do it,why not over do it. Looking great so far, cant wait to see the finished product.

Alright so its taken a good amount of time but finally I got it done to this point, adding a little more and a could middle suports and all will be well. If I had to guess this stand is about 500 pounds. Its on its front right now because I needed to finish screwing all the back together and it will stay there till tomorrow when I can find a couple people to help me flip it back over. No way possible one person could flip this thing. Even two is a joke. Ill get some more pics when its upright and show the full design. but I feel this would suport 1000 gallons. its 42 inches tall so it will be a little hard to reach stuff in the tank but its at the perfect viewing heigth. If you stand next to it you dont have to look down too much and if you sit the bottom is just a little below eye level. Over all the stand is going to cost just about 200.00 well with screws I am thinking 200.00 for sure. Please ask any questions I have not seen anyone on here for a good while, maybe everyone though this was a lost cause as I am taking too long. Im working on it along with everything else.

Great work, great thread, great progress so far. Awesome tank dimensions as well. Looking forward to seeing it all finished.

Thanks. Ya it's been a good while after I started really wanting a large tank and making plans for one. Then actually getting one and starting on that then switching over to another tank. But it's all going to be in the basement really soon.

Finally I reloaded the app back on and I can upload pics from my phone once again. Was giving me an error. It's just easy to do updates.

well here it is, Plywood needs to go on top thats why its spaced up the plywood sides. Also you will see three 2x4 together in one spot because that the 8 foot mark where I need to add the extra piece of plywood in, Too bad they didn't make in at 10 feet. If I would have remembered this I could have just moved that support over a little and been good but I don't really care and this will make sure its really well supported. Its super heavy duty. And takes up allot of room. Going to call around and get the sump drilled tomorrow, plywood top onto the stand screw it down and then cut holes for stuff needed, And here I am to give you a side comparison. And my normal Boxer dog for size comparison. Wife always wants here in every picture. :D Side note, because of the back side not being level with the front I cut the back legs at 1/2' longer than the front. this part of the cement was cut out before we got the house and a sump drain system put in. So the middle right under the stand is a little high but not really an issue, the whole stand as it sits is really level. I still plan to get some shims just for extra care.

Looks like I caught this thread at the right time! Definitely subscribed

Actually, I missed the part where it became the 600G tank set up and install, hehehe. I'm liking this plot twist!

Looking good.

I have read that you actually shouldn't screw plywood onto the top of the stand. The theory is that leaving it unscrewed lets the wood contract and expand evenly under the weight of the tank (without any weird warping that might occur if you screw it down) and also eliminates any potential point loads from a screw head. I'm not sure how much truth there is to this theory, but if I were you I wouldn't screw it down. With all that weight, the tank isn't going anywhere; even if this is just internet hearsay, I can see the logic to it.

Looking forward to seeing the tank filled. Please keep us posted!

Haven't built many stands in my time, but shouldn't that stand have support braces on the bottom? Just a thought - better safe than sorry.
