The reckoning

The bottom does not need supports as the sides and all the plywood add up to make it really ridged for that type of bracing. Remember the weight will just be pressing down. Just like a table does not have supports running all along the floor and between the legs because the weight will just press down. It does at the ends and front to back so it's all built supported. If you look at the inside pic you can see a 2x4 cut at 41" between front and back and another cut at 471/2" over the top of it. So it's all held together.

I was thinking of a door in one of the sides but honestly looking at it ajd thinking of it I don't need one with the large front door.

Took the sump in to get it drilled, They told me if the glass breaks then it breaks and its not covered at all, so if it breaks I will have to buy another tank or replace the glass. That would not be fun at all. So wish it was acrylic and I would just drill it. But I bet it will be fine as long as they are smart with it and not stupid. So that should get back to me on tuesday but I bet it wont be till wednesday. Should be about 25.00 per hole. Just the bit would have cost me 30.00 so I dont know which would have been better but I will hope going with a place to drill it is best. I am getting one drilled for the pump and another for an overflow/water drain for a drip system.

uploadfromtaptalk1339804448959.jpg this is my plan for covering this massive stand. From previous owners they left this wood floor behind and I figure I would use it here. It's just tall enough and once o sort through all of it and find the best matching Colors to go together I think it will look good

I have read that you actually shouldn't screw plywood onto the top of the stand. The theory is that leaving it unscrewed lets the wood contract and expand evenly under the weight of the tank (without any weird warping that might occur if you screw it down) and also eliminates any potential point loads from a screw head. I'm not sure how much truth there is to this theory, but if I were you I wouldn't screw it down. With all that weight, the tank isn't going anywhere; even if this is just internet hearsay, I can see the logic to it.

i put a bead of construction adheasive ( pl 400 ) around the top of the 2X frame and then set the osb on top. no screws. i then put my empty 125 on top of the osb. the next morning it was as level as it could be and there is no seperating the wood ever again. it worked flawlessly.

That is a good idea, I think at this point since it fits into the space I made by leaving the plywood a little high I am not going to use anything to hold it down, And later at some point I might want to tear it all apart.

Well today I found a 220-240 gallon acrylic tank for next to nothing 60.00 bad news it's only 3/8inch acrylic and you can see it bowing a good amount. Also seems like the over flows are leaking and a patch where they had the bottom drilled is leaking Also. 4 patches and it looks like they used bondo. Lol. I could drill this tank and use it as a sump but I don't really need the extra space and overall it's huge and not in super great shape. Not sure what else I might do with it but figured a 8X2X2 tank for so cheap would be good for something. I feel with silicone I could fill all the leaking issues easy but still is it worth using for a sump. I have my 125 at the glass shop to be drilled that is 37.00 a hole and I need 2 this tank I could drill and it's cheaper all the way. Check out the bow it has to be 1/2" uploadfromtaptalk1339893100236.jpg

Well good news and bad. Bad it took longer to get the sump drilled then planed. Also it cost me just about as much for the tank as it did to drill two holes in it. Good news the drilling was done great and No chipped areas or anything. Really happy with workmanship.
