I have read so many postes about the FH fish before i post but i am confused about the food and its relation between color and kok

so here is my question do i have to feed my flowerhorn a spacial FH food from the market to enhance the color and the kok or a good feeding is enough with shrimp, brine shrimp, blood worms, earthworms and good kind of pellets

in other words if i didn't feed it spacial FH food from the market can it get good colors and kok ?

because some people said FH fish can never get the good colores and kok without this kinds of food

note : i know It's all in the genes of my fish but i want to get the best of my FH fish

hey, I haven't been keeping FH for long but from my experience a varied diet with a good staple pellet or 2 would be best. Some of those special FH foods contain "secret ingredients" and I heard most overseas just use it to pump up thier FH before shows but not as a daily feed.

I'm currently using NLS (New Life Spectrum) as suggested by many hobbyists as my staple and giving the occasional treats of frozen blood worms and cut up market shrimp shell on, no head. Some people also use their own recipe of beef/chicken hearts and superworms, but I try and stay away from foods that make too much of a mess.

Honestly with just NLS staple, the occasional treats and frequent water changes (25% a week for myself) I have seen great improvement with my FH. I've recently been putting the a mirror in the tank for about 2 hours a day after the first morning feeding. He's been getting lighter, more colours coming out and his kok has improved.

This is just my experience and what I have researched online, I'm still new to keeping FH and maybe more seasoned hobbyists can chime in and help you out a bit more.

When I first got him.

A week or so later.

I havn't taken new pictures yet, but he already has gained a bit more kok, more brighter pearls and more vivid colours since those pics above which were about 2 weeks ago. Hope that helps.

A quality pellet, along with good maintenance will allow your FH to bloom if they have the genetics.
