The returned RTC from Hell

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks like a bull head or somethin to me try and get pictures of its head

100% not a rtc like everyone else says it's a bullhead of some sort. Maybe a speckled bullhead. Bass was very correct about high ammonia. Watch for early signs of fin and tail rot like the weathered whiskeres. Salt and heat are a good treatment along with daily water changes. You will see that red whisker fall off eventually. Infections can set in very easily there. Tank by itself, and do daily 10-20% water changes until the whiskers form a ball at the end where it will grow back. Trust me this works wonders. Keep the lights off in the room it's in also or cover the tank. Less stress=faster heal time.

I like you style!
Taking in a fish and stating you'd build a big tank if nescesary, only to find out you won't need to after all! Good luck with this monster.

THAT"S WHY WE"RE CALLED :"MONSTERFISHKEEPERS"
OUR FISH DON"T GROW TOO BIG,
OUR TANK BECOMES TOO SMALL!!

His red whisker is about gone actually. Not gone but healed. It's looking real good. I did a water change the day before so nitrates were way down. He ate some earthworm pellets today. Alot! lol He loved it, i must be doing a pretty darn good job. I'll take pics later but his color is almost full black and the red on his whisker is about gone. Looks like he is going to live a good long life. Very personable more than the gars, swims around everywhere looking for food. :) :) I'm very happy I saved this guy. Thanks everyone you all have helped sooo much.

judging from the pics i think the water he came from has killer level of ammonia those look like ammonia burns

hope it goes well and recovers for you, I picked up a 10 inch goldfish whos fins had that red blood look to them, got it healthy then rehomed it subscribed wanna see how this one turns out for ya

:grinno: Not an RTC... High Ammonia levels will cause the redness in the Whiskers and tail as well... I'm going with either that or it was being beat on by a tankmate.

You can definetly eliminate RTC though... Lets see some more pics :D
Thanks alot appreciate the info.

there is no question that it is a bullhead. doesnt look anything like a rtc or an artc for that matter. 78 is very warm since the bullhead is a native north american cold water species. try posting pics of it in the native section there are alot of bullhead keepers on there, or possibly in the outdoor pond section, there are alot of members with bullheads in there non heated outdoor ponds.
Thanks. The tank run between 76-78. I think it's helping with healing process alot!!!

It looked like a RTC at first(never seen a baby in person so IDK really)and I was just thinking of making this huge tank and I was just going to go for it. Can't say i'm sad that I don't need a tank that big, lol but I'm glad I saved him. He looked like he was on his last fins.

UPDATE: Well he is doing great!!! His whisker is fine now, no more red. It's a little shorter then the left one but looking healthy. He is just overall very healthy now. He is becoming one of my fav fish. He also eats ALOT. I'm glad he isn't a RTC I think I would need another part time job feeding one of them , lol. Pics this time too. Anyone know what type of catfish he is. It's a bullhead right?

Also he isn't really that bright around the face it's just the lights doing that. Looking healthy now especially when you compare first few pics to these.

BULLHEAD! he has a yellow belly and bull horns.
