Boomer is my green cheek conure (parrot). I got him May 2009. Well I had a baby bird (another green cheek baby) on hold for me when I got this call from a friend who worked in a pet store. She new i was looking for a green cheek. She said try to hold your tears back when you see him. So i go in and she told me the story that he was abused, neglected, dehydrated, abused mentally and physically, was around pot and cigerettes. He used to blow it in his face which is very bad because birds breath different from humans. This bird was so skinny you could see his ribs. I new he could die but he really needed care. So I payed $250 for him and brought my baby home. He got a drink and was literally choking because he was so thirsty, me and my mom were crying. He went to the vets and the vet gave him a week if i didn't get him. He was so scruffy looking. He only weight 30 grams, now he weighs 70 grams. But ( I will contain myself) :irked: the guy would shake his cage so hard just to scare him. Boomer is now confident, has nice feathers, gets baths, trusts me and will go on me. We had to go to the vets every 2 weeks for a while to get his electrolites up and treat for a bacterial infection from unclean cage and surrounding area but he pulled threw and turned into a little bugger. The vet gave me a couple free vsits which was nice.

I just don't get how someone could abuse an animal. My dogs blind as a bat and she means the world to me, i would do anything for them and some people abuse them, it truly breaks my heart. Animals are a gift.

That's a nice story and I'm happy he went to a good home.

The part I don't understand is why you had to pay $250 for a dying bird. They should have just given it to you. :screwy:

I too dont understand the fee, expecially after you took responsability...

I could see if they made you put a down payment on him and if he was still alive in a month they would give it back...

i was wondering the same thing about the price. i know it's not big deal for you as you've shown over and over that money won't stop you from giving an animal the best care possible but it seems it should've been given to you for free. The pet store turned a profit off a bird that was abandoned to them on horrible conditions before they even nursed it back to health?

I'm also curious how you found out about the birds prior treatment - the specifics like smoke-blowing, cage-shaking, etc.

SPCA probably took it, or a friend took it...dropped off at LFS...then they had to vaccinate it to make sure the rest of there birds didn't get sick.

I would assume thats where the price, and the details came from.

Awwww :)

I have a cockatiel. She's 8 right now and I got her as a little baby :) She was in a bird shop in Naples, Florida and she was hiding at the back of the tank (Yes. They had her in a fish tank.) But when I came up to the glass she started running up and down the newspaper. So, I picked her out, and then learned a couple months later that the whole store had burned down  So I like to say I saved her life :D
