Most of that speculation is based around a well preserved corpse found in a cave system on the mainland. It however was merely preserved by the conditions in the cave and was actually quite old. They are unquestionably extinct.

In regards to holding hope that a small population could still be alive you would have to keep in mind that a very small population without a larger source is considered functionally extinct as they would not have the genetic variation to propagate the species indefinitely and would die off from inbreeding depression. Grizzly Bears in the lower 48 for example are all so closely related that without any immigration from Canadian bears they are essentially doomed.
