ive heard that purigen is excellent. does it do the same thing as carbon and will it polish my water? i have always had somewhat cloudy water nomatter what i do.

This sounds like one of two things:

1: Your tank has never fully cycled

2: you don't have enough bio filtration

What are you running on what size tank? And have you tested your water chemestry for nitrites and amonia lately?

I use a carbon filter for my drip system.

one is a 90g with 2 penguin 350's, the other is a 38g with penguin 200. both have 0 amm. and nitrites, but i do have a greenwater prob. both get a 50% w/c every 6 days.
and to everyone saying that they dont use carbon that isnt what i asked, i wanted to know how long it lasts, and/or if purigen will benefit me at all. i might not need these things but it cant hurt if i change it out properly.

Just get purigen, it is amazing. I have some recharging right now in my sink.

Since I came to MFK I have taken the carbon out of all of my tanks. My water parameters are right on target. I keep a supply of carbon for removing meds and thats it. The only thing I use to treat my water is Stress Coat. (knocking on wood)

Carbon is simply not needed. It is great for removing meds. thats about it. AC has a carbon article in the works, ill post it when the Staff agrees it is ready for publication.

After reading the article in the one fish magazine a while back about carbon, I have done away with it. The only thing I use it for is to take out meds. and to polish the water for a day or so. In my opinion, people should do away with most hang on the back filters all together... They just don't make stuff like they use to!

Stress coat makes Purigen unregeneratable (say that 3 times fast) so switch to Prime, wait a month, and get some Purigen, it's amazing
