The (un)Official PetSmart Thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A company as big as Petsmart should have a proper database on all fish, plants etc. that they sell. It is a lot easier for someone to bring accurate information about a species up on a computer screen than it is to remember all the scientific names and information on each of them. This would go a long way in fixing the problem of mis-information.

NOW THAT is a good idea. There is nothing that excuses the chain store's ability to suck so much.

Oh wait...now i know the reason. Remember these stores also have massive dog and cat departments. At least where i work, the extent of the effort goes into other aspects of the store.

Moral of the story, never expect to be able to say petsmart or petco is a "good" place for quality stock, information, and logic.

the petsmarts by me are great. the kids in the fish section know alot!! i kid was so helpful in getting what i truly needed that i usually use him as a reference book. its nice to always see healthy fish and clean tanks also.

Effort follows the money, as compared to dog & cat owners, FishKeepers are in the minority. Sometimes I think we're lucky thet put fish & their stuff in the stores. Walmary around here ripped out all their tanks! It could be a trend.

my only real problem with chain stores like this is when customers come in and the staff says "you couldn't have more than 2 goldfish in that 5 gallon tank"
or "you should only put one goldfish in that goldfish bowl"

i dont care if you dont sell feeders, although i do wish you sold live blackworms and brine shrimp and stuff. I just hate the constant misleading.

there was a time when my petsmart passed out brochures on cycling, which included some info on fishless cycling, and i was thrilled.. it didn't last long though, dont know why.
I also wish there was at least internet access in the fish section so i could go online and research the fish.

no offence , i havent been on here log but dose everyone work at petsmart on this site? if so im out !!

p.s i agree 110% with mr pleco on this one responsibility is with the individual

The Walmart by me is getting rid of fish. I am trying to see if I can buy their setup:D

My 1 referal is a petsmart employee who felt I had run silly cricles around him and their store as far as proper information/care goes :)

1) There are only kids working there who don't know anything and don't care.
On this one I disagree with parts. Yes, there are alot of young people who work there, that happens in a retail industry. They do not care. Maybe true in some stores but not in all. My "kids" all try to give the best advice they can based on what they know and are told by the customer. The fact that they are young does not mean that they do not have knowledge, or does that mean anyone on this site under a certain age is also an idiot. And if they paid to get "qualified" help that everyone wants, then the prices would go up accordingly. You have to find a happy balance.

Im guilty of working at a petsmart. It has its goods and its bads. But i am knowledgable when it comes to fishkeeping and give each customer the best advice and info i can. but it always upsets me when other kids are hired and know absoluting nothin about fish, havent finished the training and booklets, are put out on the sales floor, and then are telling ppl whatever B.S. they can come up with. and as far as im concerned the training books on fish care arent detailed enough...petsmart needs to train associates better b4 stickin them out to sell fish they dont even know about. so the new assocites have to learn the rest somewhere else. this is why so many dont know much. So to people who complain about it, either dont listen to these associates or take ur business somewhere else. I far as im concerned or at least from the store i work at there are more dumb associates that know nothin and dont care to learn more, than there are knowledgable people (and im not saying im a know-it-all) such as myself and a few select others who work there that want to help cutomers the best they can. its a controversial topic. that just wut i have to say about it.:D

Platies are not much more nutritious than goldfish, and should have the same QT regiment as goldfish. Really, the fish will be nutritionally useless unless you are gut loading them prior to feeding the carnivores.

How do you know that Platies are not much more nutritious that goldfish?

Not saying you are wrong. Just wondering how you know.

Also, are you saying that all fish are nutritionally useless unless they are gutloaded? If that is what you are saying, then what about fish eating fish in the wild? Carnivores don't have the luxury of eating a "gut-loaded" fish in the wild.

I'm still trying to understand why the thread? why validate petsmart or petco or whatever? It's a chain and non service is a given when you walk into any chain store. Responsibility for your product education is on the individual , you get what you pay for......
