Actually, it depends on what type of zombie you're talking about, and I mean which media is your source. In Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks (mandatory reference if you plan on surviving the apocalypse). The Solanum virus prevents bacteria from attacking the zombie's body, so they dont decompose for decades. The same with RE zombies

This covers most zombie movies, books and comics (XXX of the dead). If its a 28 days Zombie, then you just need to wait... 28 days.

If its a HL Head Humper zombie, they remain inactive for years just waiting

Zombies dont really "need" food, they eat on instinct, that also raises the question, why dont zombies eat each other?

I didnt care for it myself. I know its meant to be satirical but restraining yourself to one definition of zombie is setting yourself up for failure in such an imaginary situation. The book repeatedly tells you that zombies CANT do such and such menial task, but what if they can and now all your defenses are worthless?
Also their weapon suggestions are retarded. Seriously? A Monks Spade? When was the last time you saw one of those at your local store? Not to mention those things are very heavy and unwieldy in untrained hands. It also keeps the (idiotic) katana myth alive. (ie its the ultimate melee weapon:screwy:) Lets face it you're not very likely to get your hands on one that can actually stand up to any use at all, much less repeatedly beating against undead spines.

How many movies prior to 2000 have zombies been able to do anything but mindless tasks? Zombies do not have the smarts to think "if I pick up this rock I can now use it to smash through a window" no the only thing on their mind is to feed. There are unwritten rules of zombies and it even goes back to the whole african voodoo zombies. They were also mindless.

Also as for weapons sure you can't find a monks spade and maybe the katana isn't the ultimate weapon but those style of weapons are what kind of weapon you should be carrying. Guns are great but you run out of ammo and your screwed. Bladed weapons are what you should stock yourself with.
