I get the best results with the lights off. Lower the chances of any reflections.

Interesting, do you manual focus? I always put as much light over the tank, even with the speedlight.

Yes, its easier to capture when they swim into focus, rather than chasing them all over the dang place with the AF beeping like no tomorrow. But the ones of the VATF were shot on AF.
