The zombie tetras

its quite interesting, I used to keep these a while back, and they are starting to grow eyes....


Oddly enough I have been seeing this species in LFS with very small eyes. It seems as though Evolution is working with in our fishtanks.

This is just a theory, but logic supports it.

-walmart out of all places got the first shipment any of us here have ever seen
-walmart is not famous for fish here - more like they sell ick infested fish that die easy
-friend buys fish anyways
-fish turn out fine
-puts fish in tank
-i go over
-he shows me these zombie fish
-i am disgusted and fascinated at the same time
-thought it was weird they have no eyes
-wanted to know more about them

so they can have eye balls????? weerrddddd I wanna see!! do they look weird?
 
These are the Astyanax fasciatus mexicanus, and the blind version is mainly from Mexico, the sighted version is more widespread and gets a little bigger, blind = 3 1/2", sighted = almost 5", they are easy to keep under standard tropical tank conditions and if you start with a half dozen or so will probably lay eggs for you, they are egg scatterers and will eat their own fry. They are fin nippers with slower moving fish and tend to try and jump if startled. here is a picture of the sighted version.
They are fairly cheap and not hard to find for sale, That Pet Place carries them online for $1.99.
