biggest piles of junk in the entire aquarium industry??

i have a 210 gallon tank that i thought i could get by with 2 400 watt heaters because the room the tank is in is fairly warm.
well i had them both set on 79 deg. and the tank would never get over 72, yet, the heaters would cycle off every couple minutes.... then! one morning i come down and see that both heaters are shattered with brown burn stains all over them.

so i call doctor fosters and smith and they say they have never heard of anything like that and that i must have got a bad batch of heaters :screwy:.

anyways, they send me two replacement heaters along with two more that i payed for.

so i now have 1600 watts of heaters in my 210 gallon where the air temp is about 70, the heaters are set on 83, the tank is at 76, and the heaters keep cycling off. they will come on for about 3 minutes then cycle off for 3. I CANNOT GET MY TANK ABOVE 76 DEGREES WITH 1600 WATTS OF HEATERS CRANKED FULL BLAST!

what should i do?

All aquarium heater thermostats in general are very low quality and will eventually fail usually within 2-3 years, though some are better than others. The only way to avoid this is to buy a quality industrial controller like a ranco.

I have been using Theo heaters on all of my tanks and love them. I have 2-400 watt heaters on my 300 set at 85 and they keep the tank at a very consistent 83. I should have another heater on the same tank, as 5 watts per gallon is usually recommended. I also have 2-400 watt heaters on my 150 and they keep the temp at a steady 87.

One thing to remember is that placement can have a huge impact on how efficiently the heaters warm the water. I have found that locating my heaters near intake/exhaust outlets keep the heaters from tripping off prematurely.

Good luck!

all four heaters are placed in areas of high flow... i haven't ever turned them on out of water... i just thought maybe the first two cracked and burned because i had them cranked for too long, and that it was just poor design.

do you guys think i should just crank all four and keep an eye on the temp so it doesn't get too out of hand.

i was ready to start spiking these things off the ground and i have looked like my avatar for the last couple of days

I had two hydor theo 100 watts leak water in the chamber in a row. No excuse for that crap. I now have 6 stealths on 5 tanks and I can now almost completely forget about the temperature worries. They are very consistent durable and easy to hide on a black background.

yep had the same problem needed a temp heater for my 20 gal and a 100 watt couldnt get the water temp above room temp wich was 70
