if you get a digi thermometer get the best one you can find. I've had some that show the tempurature being anywhere from 78-86(F) at one time. kinda hard to guess sometimes.

mercury is usually silver. that stuff can kill. now i'm interested in what makes fish thermometers tick
The red liquid is just dyed alcohol. The small amount found in an aquarium thermometer should not harm the fish.
I would be more worried about them ingesting glass shards myself....

one day i came home to find my thermometer broken in half... i have no idea which fish destroyd it but all thoes balls wer everywhere n wen i try to get them out my fish kicked up then sand n burried them all....none of my fish died tho
