Probably a silly question, but do any of you know if digital thermometer heat guns can accurately read water temperature as well as air? I was going to get one for my reptiles to simplify things, and was wondering if it'd help with fish as well.

Thanks!

Great question. I would imagine it would work perfect in an aquarium situation, but most don't own them since it is cost prohibitive. I know for a fact that the herpetologists at my zoo use them for the herps there.

I don't think they're all that expensive. I mean some are, but I think you can pick one up at home depot for under $50. Probably more like $30.

I have a laser temp. Gun from harbor freight.it was less than 40 bucks.seems acurate, also good for use during WC, to keep temps from faucet being too far off

Thank you. That's what I needed to hear!

I did some research and based on the manufacturers claims, the temp spread can be as high as 3-4F. That is for the cheaper ones. I assume you have to point it at the water. I imagine the glass / acrylic would be a degree or so different.

I use a 20 dollar therm gun from repti_zoo on all my aquariums when doing water changes. I originally bought it for use on my ball python cages but found it is much more accurate and quicker than regular aquarium thermometers.

I've seen various quality infrared thermometers locally around here for like $15-$50, depending on accuracy and spread (how small of an area is checks), seen them at AutoZone, Lowes, and Sears... Menards probably carries them also, as well as Home Depot...
