They are DEAD ! what did i do wrong ??!?!?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No, a dead puffer does not release any toxins.

I had a similiar experience. We were moving. I put my brackish fish in a new 5 gal bucket with my seasoned Eihem canister filter running and every fish I had was dead a few hours later. I had owned most of them for more than 6 yrs, and my fire eel over 10 yrs.

Those buckets are poison!!!

THe next time I moved, I used a half filled 20 Gal rubbermaid container with the canister filter duct taped to the side so i could carry both. I had put clean water in the container for about a week beforehand, changing daily, to leech out any toxins.

During the move, the container sat on the passsenger floor board with an inverter in the cig lighter to give AC to power the filter. Worked well.

You have my sympathies.

If the puffer died first, would his toxins polute the small bucket causing a chain effect? My son had a green puffer and when it died several other small fish died in his 29 gallon. (Keep in mind it's a 10 y/os 29 gallon tank with sub-par maintenance).
i think they release their poison when they died when i first started my big freshwater tank years ago i had two puffers and when one died other fish also died
