Welcome, enjoy. I'll vouch in every instance on here I've run into somebody's known something enough to help me, haven't lost a fish since. Besides, the more the better.

I'll chime in here and say that it doesn't look like Polypterus senegalus to me.....it IS a Polypterus senegalus, of that there is no question. Now...as far as its gender is concerned, beblondie is more adventuresome than I am at taking a stab at that without actually seeing the anal fin but what she's basing her statement on is the apparent swelling of the lower body at the anterior base of that fin. I'll agree that it is likely a male.
BIGgourami...I'll venture an educated guess and say that yours is likely a female.

Thanks for the feeding advice too. He has been eating beefheart, brine shrimp, and shrimp pellets. I didnt know there were so many other options though!
