its pritty easy you can just drill a hole into the back or bottom (bottom using a stand pipe) of your tank like a 25 mm or so should do, chuck a flange in the hole and use connect ur outlet to that, ie to ur canister or a sump. then pump it back up to ur tank either using a spray bar or a jet etc..

ive seen alot of ppl doing there fx5.

I will be attempting this when my new 240 arrives hopefully before xmas.I have 2 eheim 2078 that I am planning to hard plumb,It does not seem that difficult if planned and you have plenty of bends and pipe ready if needed.Although the less bends you can put in will be better.I also intend to hide all the pipe work behind a background that will be built.I am intending to use 20 and 25mm bulkheads in the base of the tank. One filter will be plumbed through a UV and the other I am planning to plumbed through a pond heater which will keep all the pipe work out of the visable display area.It is gonna be quite an interesting project to get done.

The OP asks a good question.
There are endless ways of doing the plumbling.
You need to decide three things first.
Where to put the suctions to maximize the collection of waste.
How and where to return the water to utilize the flow to direct waste to the suctions.
Both of these are affected by the layout of decorations in the tank so you'll need to have an idea of this also.
There is no "ideal" setup. What works for one may not work for another.

Here are a couple of photos of the plumbing in my 100.

For my Eheim Pro3's I drilled 25mm holes with flanges in the bottom and another hole at the top along the back. The two inlets from the bottom go straight in and the outlet goes to the hole along the back near the top. Was very simple to do.

I connected my FX5 the same way using a small piece of hose to a nipple on the pvc.

spray bar plumbed 6" from bottom keeps the sand clean and blows crude to intake on the other side. There is a theroy that the flow will increase with pvc because of the ribs on the hose supplied with an FX5, but that may be negated by any elbows added to make the pvc go where you want it.

What I am thinking about doing is having two strainers one on each side of the tank and maybe an internal overflow box centered in the back of the tank to skim the surface of the water and also have the return come up there as well. I just need to figure out the best way to route the plumbing as my tank is currently up and running and would have to get this taken care of in a weekend.
