Make sure you don't overfeed!
Is this correct? I was under the impression that Dats will not eat until death.
I feed mine ghost shrimp which i buy in bulk and put into the tank in one go. When i can see any more shrimp i go and buy more. My dats grow pretty quickly.

I wanna know why not to over feed. is it due to deterioration of water quality or do the fish eat till they die ? I read that if I could get my baby ntt's to eat at all I should "super feed " them. (At first some fish ate others didn't. All ate feeder guppies some ate glo tetra) now they eat frozen blood worms. My tank is 90 gallons and I do 25-30% water changes every 7-9 days . None of my fish have died. I say feed them as much as you can without sacrificing water quality. If the fish are small you need to fatten them up. The only downfall I see from feeding the fish alot is any uneaten food can startto rot but my fish don't eat it and I have a rena xp3 for a 175gallon on a 90. thin bars are cool fish. They are the most tepremental fish I have ever kept.

I also had a ntt just stop swimming around and die shorty after but I contributed the death to a bump in temperature over a 12 hour period (stress /mental breakdown) The process of being caught in the wild ,shippedover seas 10-12 hour flight, being put into a pet store tank ,after a week being scooped up ,bagged, in my case driven 2 hours away and introduced into a new tank. stressfull. It has been 6 weeks sinceI had my ntt's that I baught at 1 inch 4x 6weeks ago 2x 4 weeks ago 2 2 weeks ago and now 3 are 2 inch 1 is 2 1/4 and 2 are1.5inch they are only really comfortable without the light on in natural light . They change coloring in a flash from brown whitish stripes to giold with vivid black stripes in a flash

I have 8 ntt dats imported from vietnam . got them at 1 inch 5x6 weeks ag0 2x4 weeks ago and 2x 2weeks ago. I have had a death out of the first five. (I think it wwas shock cus I thought they had ich so I bumped the temp to 86. all but 1 showed no stress. They are very light sensetive. Most active before light turns on in natural light. At my LFS in Vancouver I saw some indo dats that had the worst ich I ever saw. they were also twice the size and price as my ntt's I will let you know how it goes. all I know is they sure are beautiful and vicious! even at 1.25 inch one of mine had a guppy in it's mouth and was smashing it precisely on a rock! It was awesome!

i would have to concur that the ntt's are more "fragile" than the indos. i've had a few and they all died already. most of my indo's are still alive tho, now. but it also could be that my aro was eating them till i realized. lol.

I just had one of my four 2 inchers die exactly like the first time. He was so beautiful but was swimming aroung like he had no energy, breathing heavily. He seemed to be okay but a day later he was on his side for like 16 hours. I scooped him in the net and he ate some blood worms and a minute later he just croaked and turned black. I think it was due to shock again because over the course of 3 weeks I added 6 peices of driftwood. the week before he died I added half of the wood (which is malaysian hardwood) Also due to a water issues in my town the tap water was 6.5-6.8 unlike usual 7.5-8. thus dropping ph even lower after a water change. Until driftwood was added ph was at a 7-8 consistently after driftwood the ph was 6.5 poor little ntt I will miss you!

I think shock plays a big part of it. My smallest NTT goes on its side and does not move a muscle for at least 10 minutes every morning when i switch the lights on. Same every day, i mean it freezes, i can't even see its gills moving. My other 2 are fine.
