It sounds wrong if you take away the contraction though:

Why did not doomiedee run before the police surrounded him?

As opposed to:

Why didn't doomiedee run before the police surrounded him?

I'm a scientist so I don't bother with grammar, but I feel like there's at least a better way to word it.

Yea but its an exception and every language has them. with out it you would said why did you not, with this rule now it becomes why didn't you. French language has this. Something's are clearly wrong like irregardless even though its in my phones dictionary ....

Actually, I've seen many BBC science specials where the metal was referred to as a-l-u-m-i-n-i-u-m.

Cause that's how they spell it in england.

LOL, somethings are for the better...or is it gooder-er, bestest....

I guess the way things got changed is like the game "telephone" , over the years people say it and gets passed on to the next generation, and in the end it's a whole nother word.
