Its probably all about getting them from a good lfs or distributor unfortunately my lfs doesnt carry great quality of discus but all the other cichlids they get in are very good

Haha luckily for me I'm living at home for college. And word on the street is discus are not terribly hard. Not as hard as everyone stresses at least.

Discus were known to be the delicate fish that no one ever wanted, but wanted...........The fish started a stronghold in the Bay Area in the late 60's to early 70's..............Today, $500 pairs are bred in 20g TALL tanks.......The setup:One brick, one airstone, 78-82 degrees.............

Plecos = poop machines, as you probably know. especially with sand...

Discus = high water temps, clean clean clean water. Lot's o water changes. Good, healthy fish to start with in the first place. Quality food. and lots of water changes - worth repeating.
