Getting really scared for my big girl....she is around 7 yrs old now, and stopped eating around a month ago since then I have been able to coax her into taking a little mussel or shrimp or bloodworm....but only by putting it on to a fork and literally placing it at her mouth to try and initiate a reaction, its been more than 2 weeks ssince she would even do this.....When she didn't eat for a week I treated the tank with Octozin which is a source of Met thinking she may possibly have early signs of bloat or impaction....but 2 courses later she still shows no inclination to eat, she is now very lethargic sitting almost on the bottom of the tank...

This all started in my opinion when she got into a fight a couple of months ago with a 12" Umbie he bit her eye....which became infected....after treating with anti-bacterial meds the infection cleared up it left the eye still a little 'mangled' looking but at least the infection cleared. She stopped eating while the infection was at its worst but after it cleared up she began eating again with gusto and I was so relieved, the only thing that was different was she wouldn't touch prawns which she had loved before but now would only eat pellets and food sticks....when she stopped eating the second time after about a week....she developed a large patch of new black pigmentation round her affected eye...this is still there yet...it is definitely pigment not bruising....which I've never seen with a fish before and after much forum searching and googling haven't seen anyone elses fish do this either....i'm thinking maybe some of the bacteria got behind the eye and travelled up the optic nerve causing some kind of brain infection....

The tank is a 255gal she is in there with some other large cichlids an Irwini and 2 Silver Arros.....params are all fine Amm= 0 Nitrite =0 Nitrate 20-50, water is changed 25-30% weekly, no other fish is affected...(Umbie now in his own 135gal), or bothering her(at 20"+ no one goes near her)....I have more Octozin on order to try a third course...but not sure she is going to make it, last couple of days I have done an extra W/c may do another tonight....

Any thoughts ? I'm especially interested to hear if anyone has seen or heard of another fish develop 'spontaneous' pigmentation...
hating fishkeeping right now....

Well she's still hanging in there.....amazingly for a fish that has not eaten anything for 5 weeks she looks no different colour is still vibrant....but her good eye is now gone a little cloudy, I'm performing water changes every other day....but as a result of the three Metro ttments back to back I now have a serious bacterial bloom going on...I also tried Epsom salt with the last metro course but still saw no faeces at all, poor thing can't have anything to expel if it was bloat it would have reached critical point by now I would think.....she is showing no signs of bloating nor is her underside sunken from not eating....I'm still praying this is a 'hunger strike' after the emotional upheaval of being 'overthrown' as tank boss......just clinging to somre hope she may start eating again. I tried a few other tricks....feeding dead frozen lance fish...not interested....garlic soaked brine...nothing. I have ordered a bottle of seachem 'entice' appetite stimulant but not holding much hope in this as I've tried it before to no avail. I have more Metro on stand by but really want to let the tank settle through the bloom before trying anything else. Params are consistant Amm=0 Nitritr=0, Nitrate =20, Temp 82, ph 7.8

I'm surprised there's so few comments or that more people didn't try to help, guess your thread went unnoticed the first time around. Unfortunately I have no experience with Cichla or the symptoms your talking about except the not eating and hazy eyes so I can only give you a guess as to what's happening. The eyes clouding is probably stress, despite you thinking there is none there maybe something you don't perceive stressing her perhaps after lights out. As far as not eating I've used Epsom salt just as you've tried with success every time. Perhaps your over medicating which could also be a source of stress for her and she's reacting poorly because it came on the heals of an attack on her so the other fish are coping with it well but not her. My best suggestion would be to move her to the 135 as a sick tank and try to return the Umbee to gen pop of the 225. Keep the lights off and maybe give her a couple of days with no meds and for her to settle before trying Epsom salt again if she still doesn't feed. Good luck man, hope you don't lose her.

Bass can go months without eating. Is she actually swimming or whats going on with her. Pics. Video. More information. Foods you feed what was her favorite?

The pituitary glan located at the base of the brain and very close to the optic nerve. It is responsable for melanin-stimulating hormone, which influences skin color in fish. This is interesting because it could have been damaged buy the trauma to the eye or the resulting infection. If this is the case it could explane the black pigmentation.

Thanks Tom....I thought I was close....with the cerebral infection theory....I was a med student 25 years ago...and still remember reading about tumours in certain endocrine organs and hormone producing parts of the brain which can stimulate over production of the hormone in question...but if worst case scenario she has a brain 'infection' or even tumour that still wouldn't expalain complete loss of appetite so sudden...
Kevin, she sits about 2-3 inches off the bottom out front in the middle of the tank any of the other fish swim near her she chases them away...will try and get a quick pic..as I say water is cloudy from the bloom but she still looks perfect on her good side...

I know some people will be totally against this but have you thought of trying feeders? you could quarantine them for a bit before trying them, like I said I know some people will bash me for it, I myself don't use feeders but I would try just about anything if I was in your situation. I hope she pulls through

I wouldn't rule out the fact that it could effect the appatite. Now the question becomes what would be the correct med to try.

Ok got a few pics the one of the bad eye with the pigment patch was with the flash on so isnt great and she wont turn round again.....also a close up of her 'good' eye showing the cloudiness...
