So I'm think of making a lobster tank. Wondering of what kinda of lobster would be good for a beginner? what kinda of stuff do you need in a lobster? Would a 40g be big enough for a lobster? what kinda of tank mates can you put with it? and how many can you keep together? thanks for your help.

The generic "blue lobster" is usually Procambarus alleni, which is a highly aggressive species of crayfish. You'd be best just getting a smaller tank and housing it by itself or doing a larger species only tank (but with only a few crayfish).

Are you picking them out from a LFS or the internet? If you're going to do the latter, you can find a variety of crayfish to suit a better range of tanks than if you're just picking from what a LFS usually orders in.

That aside though, check out some of our stickies for care information on a few different crayfish species, you may find something interesting you like to keep more. And keep in mind, with a few exceptions, planted tanks are going to get ripped apart, most tankmates may be viewed as a food source and crayfish usually aren't social (so if keeping multiples, use larger tanks).

Personally, I'd recommend picking up a Red Claw... they're beautiful, large, more docile in temperament, etc. And very easy to care for.

thanks for the help and yes i was thinking about getting them from my local lfs they have a wide variety of differnt crays and i wanted to put just a bunch of guppies so if they eat them thats ok but i wanted to put at least two together maybe three dont know if that would be possible no plants going in just rocks and drift wood. and gravel base

most red claws are docile but the one i had past away but when i got it it was at the pet store tearing apart pacu like they were nothin so mine might have just been a mean one i had to keep him alone in a tank

I have a 27 gallon divided loster tank(36X12X15) that houses an asian tiger lobster and a snow white lobster along with an albino African clawed frog. If you still wish to keep crays I would recommend having a divider because when one molts, another one will most likely kill the freshly molted cray.
