Anyone have any first hand experience with Amia calva? They have always caught my eye and I would like to learn some more about their captive behavior and care before taking the plunge.

I know this isn't experience in keeping them, but I've caught tons of them, and wondered myself why they aren't more popular among fishkeepers. Especially on MFK! They are an awesome fish. Shouldn't be hard to keep. From what I've heard they can survive in almost any condition. They get huge 30"+ and I know in early summer they get a really wild green on their belly. Almost fluorescent.

Awesome pics! Thanks for sharing! The belly on the one in the second pic is amazing!

wow....wish there was a bowfin that got under 12".....they are seriously like snakeheads and those are awesome.

if you got a 3ft wide tank, i'd say F'in A, get a bowfin!

What about suitable tank mates (if any!) if, hypothetically, I were to start with a bowfin under 12" in a 125? I fully understand that this would be a very temporary arrangement.

a ah :naughty: snakehead :nono: i guess they are probably illegal, and thas why u wanna know about bowfin.

Trust me, if I REALLY wanted to I could get a snake head;) I'm just currently infatuated with the Bowfin.

don't know about tankmates. Do a search here on MFK. They've been discussed a great deal. I can't sell them, but I know of a HUGE supply of them that I could help you aquire. The water is green with bowfin. There's litterally so many that you can't see the bottom of the river. They're stuck there because of a dam. Pretty fun to catch. I've caught them in the 27-28 inch range. They're REALLY cool looking fish. the pics don't do them justice.

larger catfish such as yellows and channels.
most will not eat manufactured food from what i have read.
varied diet is a must.
they have not been bred in captivity as far as i know
