don't know about tankmates. Do a search here on MFK. They've been discussed a great deal. I can't sell them, but I know of a HUGE supply of them that I could help you aquire. The water is green with bowfin. There's litterally so many that you can't see the bottom of the river. They're stuck there because of a dam. Pretty fun to catch. I've caught them in the 27-28 inch range. They're REALLY cool looking fish. the pics don't do them justice.

IF/when the time comes(fingers crossed) I may hit you up to help me "acquire" one, I'm sure we could work something out;) I do manage a LFS here and we see a lot of cool stuff:D

Trust me, if I REALLY wanted to I could get a snake head;) I'm just currently infatuated with the Bowfin.

i really want to.....i can't.....maybe i should break a few laws and get one lol ;)

but actually, now that i think of it, you'd probably only need a 2.5 foot wide tank to house one for life, as in captivity i'm doubting it'll reach the 30" potential, it'll probably get to be 26 or so.

Man, I want a bowfin someday too, but theyre illegal and an invasive species.

Get a bowfin while you can, and get a snakehead if you can also!

every BOWFIN I have ever owned has been big pussy cats VERY SKITTISH fish tho my current one WON'T EVEN EAT LIVE all she eats is HIKARI BIO-GOLD and she has NEVER hurt anybody else in her tank

a friend of mine has one about 12in. in a tank full of small semi-aggressive gouramis and barbs and stuff the the gouramis and ctenopomas are WHEREING THE BOWFIN OUT BEATING HIS RUTHLESSLY I JUST TOLD HIM TO MOVE HIM FROM THAT TANK

THAT BOWFIN COULD VERY VERY EASILY SWALLOW EVERY FISH IN HIS TANK WHOLE BUT DOESN'T TOUCH A ONE

that is odd. i've heard of bowfin just terrorizing other fish.

strange indeed

After further thought and investigation, I've decided to deep six the idea (for now:naughty: ). I don't have the willpower( or the space ) to devote a tank to one fish at the moment. I need to have a wide variety of fish in my tanks. Ah well......

too bad
they seem like awesome fish.
Im putting one in my natives pond

there big fish, i would say a 8'x30" footprint at the least, cool fish, but as with many native fish i have kept they are skittish,
untill very occustomed, and feeding prepared foods,
is at least for mine out of the question.
i would say go for it if you plan to be able to keep it into adult hood, if not than no.
