Hello, i am only in junior high school but am thinking about saving up materials and money to build a mega tank.
My biggest dream would to own a 100,000 gallon freshwater aquarium absolutely full of south american fishes.
Another dream of mine would be to have a 50,000 gallon african cichlid aquarium.
And the final big dreams of my life would be to go to the amazon and collect wild fish for myself
I was just reading about the 50,000 gallon aquarium someone on this website built and was wondering how much money it costs to build aquariums like my dream tanks.

Keep in mind, those are just dreams, not a reality. Depending on how much money you save the best you is 1-5000 gallons.

It costs a lot of money to build huge tanks like that. It would probably cost 1 million dollars to build a 100,000 gallon tank. Build a tank that you can afford for now.

Go for it :)

Btw, the cost a trip to the Amazon to collect fish would be equivalent to your weekly electric / food bill. Pretty sure you could afford that, if you could afford the other two...

I've actually heard of people going down to the Amazon, catching fish and having them shipped back to the US for their tanks. I'm sure that isn't cheap but it would really cool. It is certainly on my bucket list.
A lot of people keep wild caught fish. You have to keep the water parameters close to what they are from where the fish was caught to reduce stress. Along with that they may become stressed because a glass box isn't as open as a river. Those two reasons are why I don't want wild caught fish.

I'm well aware many people keep wild caught fish. Many of them look better in my opinion as well. But the difficulty of keeping them, which for most species I haven't found to be that much more difficult, was not my point.

My point was that there are trips specifically for going out on a boat on the Amazon for X amount of days, using a rod and reel or nets, catching all sorts of fish and holding onto the ones you like and want to keep. Those actual fish go into your tank back at home, not just some random wild caught ones.

That's not going to be cheap. I can't argue about it not being fun though.

I do agree with you there! lol Thousand or so to fly down, not a clue what a week on the river fishing would cost, but then I'm sure a thousand plus for the permits and freight to ship the fish back. It would be amazing but it really isn't for the average hobbyist. Taking a trip down to FL to catch pbass in the canals is a bit more reasonable lol

If I did that I would just end up having a couple $3k Angelfish.
