I have been thinking about getting a new tank probably a 75 gal, maybe a 90 gal not sure yet. I am open to suggestions but I only want to keep a single fish in it. I was thinking about a flowerhorn. What suggestions do you have for a solo fish tank? keep in mind I already have a tank with 2 oscars so I wanna get something different for this one. Thanks and merry fishmas to all!

Go with the bigger tank. Can’t go wrong giving a fish more space.

Personally I would go with a 90 gallon. A bit more volume and the 2ft height makes For a better display. That was my first big tank when I was a kid around 8 years old. Most memorable Christmas present I have received. Had the tank for 5 years, never put a scratch on it. Looked new until the day I sold it. I remember apologizing to my parents afterwards as I was filled with guilt lol

It would be better if we knew your general water conditions first such as PH, and hardness. Fish can adjust some, but long time exposure can lead to disease.

Yes it's generally better to have more water than less. Tho footprint of the tank also plays a role in what we can keep.

I dont have the tank yet this is going to be a project over the next 3 months giving me time to buy equpiment and also let the tank cycle so the parameters are all in check but the water I use for my tanks has dgh of about 16 with 300ppm and the ph is 7.8
I usually add drift wood to all my tanks so that will most likely lower it

Actually you are right in the ball park for Centrals, that most hybrids (Flowerhorns) are derived from.

You say a solo fish set up. I am guessing a big personable fish that greets you alias "Glass banger" as they call them. I would suggest getting a 6ft 125 instead. That way any fish that gets to 12in is available to be picked from.

What fish do you like?

You could do a rainbow wolf, sunfish, or something more out of the box.

If your wanting to stay within the cichlid realm.

* red istlanum (think mini umbee)
* lyonsi ( mini trimac)
* red tiger mota, Freddie, or loiselle
* hemichromis fascistus or elongatus (africans)

Flowerhorn can have terrible problems and i would imagine need a bigger tank

P PYRU I will take a look at the ones you posted. I was thinking something native to where I live(Michigan) and the first thing that came to mind was a pumpkinseed, they are in lakes all around me

That's a great choice. Longears are my favorite, but I really like pumpkins as well.

Sunfishes would probably be the way to go. I like rock bass too.
Your tank wouldn’t be suitable for one but a bowfin would be cool!
