ey guys, i'm currently residing in VA and was wondering if there are any laws regulating on making ponds? im thinking about making one roughly around 6-8ft wide and 2ft deep. is this good for the winter chills? i'm thinking about putting natives into it and am wondering if they'll survive the winter if it's 2ft deep. if i have to, i would consider making it 30" deep, if that'll keep them alive from freezing. also, what is a tough pond liner product or company that'll last long and not tear easily from natives? i'm thinking about putting a lmb, some bluegills and sunfish. thanks for any advice.

I don't know about regulations in your area but here in NY state the general rule of thumb is a depth of 36"+ requires a permit.
As for a liner I personally order all of my liners, Firestone 45 Mil EPDM, from AZPonds.com. Best price (I can find) and top notch customer service + fast shipping.

Here's some calculators that might help.

No deed restrictions?

Anti-kid fence?

You need to go below the frost line about a foot or so, and at least use an aerator for water movement (especially in the winter, so it won't ice over).

Hope your taking pix...or we'll make you start over! :D

lol. i just dug for an hour today and it was not fun at all. i never knew digging would be this hard. as far as depth goes, i'm thinking about 3ft or maybe 40" deep.

i have a question though. is it really necessary to have some kind of water flow? would i need to buy a pond filter or could i just just stick a water pump and try and work something out?

What??? Diggings not FUN?!? Shirley...you jest. :D

Water movement is necessary to keep the water from stratifying and becoming toxic and limits the usable size of the post since the fish won't go into these areas (and it would be a shame to waste all your FUN work huh?).

You can do a DIY in pond filter (plastic shoe box w/ holes and filter material and a fountain pump for aeration).

24" is deep enough so long as there is a hole in it in the winter. Check local building codes for regs. on pools and ponds. Where I live anything over 24" needs to have a fence around the yard.

eyy guys, i'm going to start digging again tomorrow. as far as my planning goes w/ this, i don't feel too organized. i might try and go deep as 36" and as of width and length, as good as maybe 7-8ft hopefully. ohh and i'll start taking pics as i go along. i'll post the pics all at once when done w/ this thing in another thread. as far as this thread has gone, i'll use it to ask questions for any help i'll need. thanks

A depth of 3 foot will allow fish to winter good. I wouldnt have it any shallower than 2.5ft. The deeper it is, the better your fish will be. Always have water movement in a pond over winter, even if you place a few strong powerheads near the waters surface, it still helps fgrom the water becoming still so ice can take hold.

hey guys, sorry for the late update. i have dug a total of 4hrs (yes, i'm a slow digger cuz i assumed this was going to be easy). tomorrow i'll put in another hr or so to finish it up. meanwhile, i know it's been a month since i started and im still not done digging. the reason why is b/c i'm only 17, a teenager who wants to enjoy his summer before school and the weather here has been extremely hot and humid. BUT, like i said, i've only put a total of 4hrs of effort or maybe 3 in the past month. BUT AGAIN, where the pond is dug, before it there used to be like at least 50yrs worth of vine growth. so b/c of this, i had to tear out all the vines and they were pretty deep rooted, w/ the addition of digging through lots of small to large rocks, roots, and some cement?
basically, i will be posting some pics of how far i've done, but tomorrow.
i will be ready to order pond liner tomorrow also as soon as i get the dimensions of the pond accurately as possible, but to my guess, it looks like 7ft-4ft-3ft, about 630g says azponds.com.
also, i think i need to start planning a pond filter for it. if anyone can give me ideas or knows of sites where they teach you and show examples of how to make a cheap and efficient one, that'll be great.
thanks again.
