Thinking about a ray

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sent you a message back.... Mite be worth it to just stop by if you venture up north - I'm in clear Lake IA. Would be a lot easier to just show you what you'd be getting into.......

I would love to do that. Happy to make a trip to check it out. Let me know when it would work for you!

Getting parts ready for the new tank. I have a free next reef sump to use (it had cracked baffle but I fixed it) it's only 30g so I bought a 40 breeder and will connect them with bulkheads under the stand. They both just fit. Since this new tank will be next to my 120 I am going to connect the sumps with with some flex PVC pipe. I don't plan on having very much water movement between them. I will have the UV unit in the 120 discharge in the sump of the 180, it's only about 100gph. This way I can use the drain on the 120 and drip RO water to both tanks. The horizontal distance would be to great for a drain to work in the sump of the 180, so this should work pretty well. I have a dual head masterflex variable speed pump with easy change heads that I use for the RO/DI from 2 44g burtes linked in the back room. Will give a total volume of 350g give or take a bit. Will use separate return pumps, heaters and media in each sump though.

Got the stand today and cut plywood for a solid top. Will drill the 40b this weekend. It's pretty fun! Unlike my 120 I am going to go all ultra flex pvc plumbing. Hard line looks nice, but ultra flex just works so well.

I am planning on doing some small rays and SD in the 180 still, although it might take a while to find some.

Any other recommendations besides silver dollars with the rays? I think a school would look great, but I don't want a bunch of nervous fish. Hated that with discus.

Red rainbow fish maybe? Glossolepis incisus. 10-15 maybe? Sounds like they get 5-6" and remember this is with mini marble or hystrix.

Yay, got the two sumps connected. 4 holes drilled and no leaks, whew. In the 180 stand connected the 30 and 40B and attached them to the 120's sump and routed the 120's UV output into the 180s sump(s) giving ~75gph flow between the two. Thankfully my friend came over and helped. Was a 4hr 2 person project, would have taken me much, much longer. Now just need the tank...
