Well the title says it. Im looking at getting a bichir, a senegal bichir to be more specific, and i was wondering what the growth rate is and how easy they are to care for? Thanks for the info!
They'll hit 6" pretty quick and then slow way down. They're pretty easy fish with a few basics set up.
Cover your tank! they are escape artists and will jump through tiny holes to their death.
Avoid sucker type fish. Plecos and Algae eaters can eat their slime coat and cause all kinds of problems.
I would recommend against gravel as they can eat bits of it by accident and get real messed up. other than that read through the primer in the stickies and welcome to the addiction.
A senegal would be fine in a 55, or even a 40 breeder, but that's pushing it. Be prepared though Hwom91, I went from 1 single senegal as a tankmate for my african knife to plotting bichir species tanks in under a year, they're extremely addictive, lol. Very engaging fish.
Ha,cholly you sound just like me lol
I got my first O a year ago and now ive got 3 big Os,4 Endlis,2 sens and two palmas polli and a delhezi and yes they are VERY addictive, like i said to fishaddict on his thread hwom, just do it you wont be dissapointed, but do factor in that you will WANT a bigger Tank for all the bichirs you WILL buy lol
I just bought mine 3 days ago they are really great to own and they will tear up feeders. I put 5 feeders in my tank and he ate them all in an hour but I noticed that he was over eating so dont over feed him. But he will eat anything that fit's in his mouth so no fish small enough to fit in his mouth. If he eats too much they are very active so he will burn food fast which means he will grow fast. They are very easy to take care of and I highly recommend this fish to everyone.
yeah they grow fast i now have 3 sens and my largest one has grown a good inch a month (the smallest one isnt growing as fast but i think thats because he is more timid than the other two and so doesnt get as much food as them) and is now almost 6in long so i gather he will probably slow down soon from what others have said, also you want to stay away from feeders that you havent quarantined as they are kept in bad conditions and will most likely have parasites that they can pass on to your other fish
