I'm thinking about getting. My hands wet with hybrids and would like to start with flowerhorns. Are their any special needs for these fish that I should be aware of, and how long would one be alright in a 55

Any large growing cichlid would be ok in a 55 gal for maybe a year or so. I personally wouldn't go any smaller than 125 gal for a larger cichlid.
Get a shortbody for a 55 and it will be good in there for life. Everything you should be aware of as a new fh owner can be found in a sticky thread above.
Id be growing them in the 55 and then moving them to the 125 in the living room so I'm not worried about tank size
They are very aggresive And no tank mates are recommended whatsoever. They are beautiful fish if you find the right one.
My moms Oscar that's in the 125 is old, I mean really really old. So if he's still alive in another year or so I'll get the flowerhorn a new tank but I don't think the Oscar will live that much longer
and be in mind, a 3-4inch flowerhorn showing signs of good genetics - flowering, kock, elongated fins - will cost a pretty decent amount of money as compared to other fw fish and don't have the life longevity of many other fish because of the fact they are hybridized line after line .
I think I'm going to try the "low quality " flowerhorns before I go out and spend 200 dollars on a fish I may or may not like
for a FH to live his life time, you need at least 100g for a young adult then move up to 150g is great if you can
