I have always liked rays. I have been keeping fish for over 30 yrs.kept discus and many other fish over the years. piranha being my favorite. Im wondering about the varied diet. I feed my meat eating fish northern pike. Why do you need to vary the food, are there things you shouldn't feed rays. there are certain fish you're not supposed to feed piranha. Are there also fish you shouldn't feed rays. how much of a temp drop can rays tolerate. I only have a cold water faucet in the basement. and living in nd the water comes out pretty cold especially in the winter. it's not uncommon to drop it 10-15 deg during a water change. Thanks for any info

That water change temp can put many fish into shock. Well I know certain fish can be harmful for rays I forgot the reason why but go to fish is talipia my rays will only eat talipia barely eat anything else.

Wow, I am surprised you have successfully kept fish with water changes temps dropping like that. That amount of fluctuation isn't healthy for any species that I know of.

I am still new to ray keeping myself, but I feel certain that a ray wouldn't handle a temp fluctuation that large. I try to keep mine 1-2F from what the tank sits at, anything more I feel could be an issue.

I agree, fluctuations that high can't be good for any fish at all. The temperatures in nature can swing around 10 degrees from day to night time on some days but it's a very gradual change. You could always store water and heat as needed but I don't see that as very cost or time efficient.

I agree that large scale temperature swings aren't ideal.

Depending on your tank size, I would just buy a couple of large drums and age/heat your water prewater change. Really is space dependant and how badly you want to keep rays. Like most of fish keeping it is all about keeping stable conditions.

Just do small water changes more frequently and you will be fine.

30 years keeping fish I think the guy knows what he's doing

If you want to age and preheat water, I recommend looking for some food grade plastic barrels. I got two 55gal drums for $10 each here. I plan on using them to age and heat water for quick water changes on my new setup.

Why not invest in a tankless water heater?

I believe before I registered I read some of his threads about Phirana breeding. I think he knows what he's doing.

so the reason I generally dont worry with the water temp. when there is a large change in water temp it signals the start of the rainy season. i have done water changes like this weekly for many years. with piranha and discus. to solve this i can add a auto water top off on my main system. and that would add water slower. because this system holds 700- 800 gallons. this includes a 220, 300 gal tanks and two 100 gal stock tanks. the way i do changes now is i drain my discus tank. then refill out of the system. due to the discus and plants not liking water out of the tap. so i mix, heat, and age my water in the system. then use that water to fill all my other tanks. heres an old video

Looks like a good system.

This tip may give you some ideas... I installed a 400 gal through-the-door water storage tank in a downstairs walk-in closet. I insulated the closet and added a heater to the storage tank. The water to the tank runs through a 5-stage filter. There's also a large airstone in the tank that runs off the main blower for my hatchery. This system makes water changes in the house tanks more pain-free.
