Thinking about going back to canister filters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've used sumps for a long time and never had an issue. They are quiet (usually, unless you have a fluidized bed filter), convenient, dilute waste more, and will not suck up food like a canister will (depending on what you're feeding, pellets or something larger like that will be fine)

I may try to tinker a bit more with it to see where I can get it too.

Now this might be crazy would 3 of these 125 sponges work in conjunction to an hob?

Lustar – Hydro-Sponge V Filter for Aquariums up to 125 Gallons https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002602SM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_tdC-Cb725YKHY

If you would rather go with one or two larger sponges, i would recommend the aquatop 180 or 250 sponge filters. Ive had good results with them and a hygger 10W pump, though for a low tank like a 125 long that much power may not be needed.

Yeah you could use those sponges. People will big fish rooms use sponges bc it's cheaper to run a bunch of those off a giant air pump.

I use two sponges in my 125 using my powerhead. I originally didnt like the idea of running the powerhead unprotected but now I think it would be fine.

I recommend the Hydro V pro version. The regular has smaller pores and it's a pain to rinse it out. The pro has bigger.pores.and rinses much easier.

You can get them cheaper here but you have to factor in shipping (can also pick up for free if you happen to live by Gurnee IL):

Pro version:

Regular one (one I don't recommend as it's harder to rinse. I have both this and the Pro):
Thank you for the tip!

I think I will give this a try, and make sure I get the pro series.

For the price it's worth trying, worst case I'll end up with extra filters which is never a bad thing
