could have been ammonia... it is more toxic @ high PH.... i understand where you are coming from but allot of people cant control there ph properly when lowering it and make it unstable and cause a swing and kill the fish as well.....

i agree with you 100%. the person in the story i mentioned before insisted his water parameters were perfect so thats what i went off of. it could of been an undetectable amount of ammonia at such a high ph which killed his ray. but anyways what me and nic are trying to say is make sure you keep your water clean and constant whether high ph or low, the ph spike will kill it or the small traces of ammonia with i high ph with high temps will kill it. goodluck to you and you've come to the right place for advice. oh ya forgot to mention i have never had any problems with any rays getting sucked by the intakes, just make sure it has a decent prefilter on it so you dont get the straight up vacuum effect, IDK but that might do some damage.

well said.... :)

No offense, but if you said "It's time" when you upgrade to a 125g.. what are you going to when "It's time" to upgrade to a 300g+ tank in a year or two?

I see alot of new prospective raykeepers get excited when they finally get a 'big tank', like a 125g.. but they fail to realize that is just a starter tank and upgrading is sooner than you think, especially because everyone usually starts out with Motoros.
no dont get me wrong i do have a 300 gal right now but i wanna start them in a 125 for now untill i buy another 300 gal bcus i wanna use this 300gal for my sw predators(hopefully) i will eventually upgrade and i am aware of having to upgrade...now what is an easy ray to start out with and where would you suggest getting them from if not the lfs thanks for the feedback guys

pat breeds motoros.... i would recomend a captive bred pup over a wild ray.... you would be fine for a year or 2 with your tank before you have to upgrade.....

you could also contact mike @h20 custom aquatics for some marbled motoro rays but he tends to have them @ 8"....

I started with two wild caught teacup retics as my first rays. They were in exceptional health when I got them, ate within hours of being in the new tank and they're still doing great today. Buying a ray that's doing really well is a key factor in your success (among other things). A bunch of members are meeting at H20 next weekend and I'm sure they can point out some rays for you that look hardy and healthy. A lot of people start out with Motoros because they're said to be more hardy but I've read that it's partly because Reticulatas aren't caught and imported with as much care because they are cheaper. IMO, you can start with any ray. It depends on what ray's pattern and coloration you like, how much money you can spend and whether the one you want is healthy.
