Right now I have a 40 gallon african cichlid tank. I was thinking of getting a 75 gallon SA cichlid tank.

this is what I was thinking for a fish list.

jack dempsey- 2
green terror- 2
salvini-2
texas-1

them maybe get a red devil. Is this to much?

Short Term it is OK Long term you will have problems. If you get all males you might be OK

I would go with a pair of Salvini and Pair of Jack dempseys with about 15 Buenos Aires Tetra's

Or go with a pair of Green Terrors and 12 Green Swordtails. Get the terrors small and the swords 3 inch or so. They will adapt together

If you do a Devil Get 6 of them and let a pair form, An adult pair in a 75 is just enough room and you will really enjoy them with babies all the time.

You can do the same with the Texas

8 potentially 10-12" fish in a 4 footer is not a good idea. Short term as juvis you'd probably be ok, but eventually they would outgrow the system. And if your Salvini pair and spawn, all other tank mates are in big trouble.

Unfortunately a 75 is not really that big a tank when considering CE/SA cichlids. Either keep fewer fish, or maybe consider other types of cichlids. Africans would work, as would smaller new worlds

I might get fewer. Also would a red terror go good with any of those fish?

Not in a 75. I have our Festae in a 300 with 4 other cichlids and longterm the jury is still out as to wether it'll work out. I wouldn't try a Festae in anything less than a 6' tank with other mates. just my 2c

I know that a lot of people don't fancy the africans but bare in mind those guys LOVE being overcrowded, in fact it helps them be less aggressive. Obviously there are some larger africans that don't appreciate crowding but a little reading up here and there and you might find yourself being suprised.
I think if you want to get your original stock go for it, it's your tank.

Yes there is a chance it might not work out, but like all us cichlid keepers you experiment, and if your fish are fighting too much then you just remove some until you get the balance right. these guys are trying to make it easy for you and tell you what will work in there long term. but if you are the kind of aquarist who changes their mind on stocking every few years or so then you really need not worry too much, just keep an eye on them all and make sure they are healthy. if they fight, remove one of them either to another tank or to the LFS.
