thinking of a new 75 gallon SA cichlid tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Doubt that stock will work out, I already tried a texas with a JD and it didn't work out in a 75g and I even bought them when they were the same size, the texas grew faster as well. All fish are different though, so you might get lucky.

You can place growouts of these fish together in the 75 but you will have to remove some as they mature because of size and aggression. This will give you a chance to see which fish you will actually like to keep. I think a 75 is far too small for all of those fish to live together long term though. A few of those fish could live together in a 75 without little problem. You also have to consider how a breeding pair will alter the dynamics of an otherwise calm tank. Things can change pretty fast when a pair is protecting fry. A Red Devil in the mix will most likely fail. They grow large very quickly. A RDs adult size coupled with their aggressive nature makes them hard to keep with other fish, particularly in small tanks. I would either keep a pair of your other choices with a few dithers or keep a couple single specimens of the smaller-growing cichlids on your list. Good luck to you!

Yeah Clownknife is correct, all fish are different. like others have said it CAN work, but you need to pay close attention to them and be ready to act if anything goes wrong, do you think you can handle that responsibility? if so then you can give it a go at your own risk.

If going with a multiple species Central American Tank ( Only the GT is South America) you could chose Males only and try from the following species. Buy them small, give them plenty of driftwood, caves and rocks.

Nicaraguense
Netroplus
Salvini
cutteri
Honduran Red Point
Firemouth
Jack Dempsey ( Some can be pretty docile as I have kept with Angelfish)

If you go South American there is allot less aggression

Severums
Festivums
Geophagus
Rainbow Cichlids

It is all a matter of what you want and if willing to move fish if they get to aggressive

Best of luck to you
