i have been cycling my 29gal for a while with nothing in it for saltwater but i really want another turtle...so im thinking i turn my 29 into a turtle tank and im debating getting a male reeves ...

feel free to help me make my decision by sharing personal expeirence or bringing to light the pros and cons of keeping said species...thanks all

Im pretty sure Reeves get about painted turtle size... Unless you plan on expanding to a bigger tank, I dunno. Stinkpots and related turtles fit pretty well for life.

it wouldnt be for life...
im working on getting a 55gal from a friend who isnt really using it (for the past year and a half) but she isnt sure if she is ready to get rid of it...
i thought about stinkpost cause vicous inspires me as far as turts go and i saw two baby stinkpots at a store my friend works at (same store with the reeves)...continue to give input please all

If you can get a Stinkpot, go for it! They are awesome little turtles with lots of personality. Plus as you know they don't get very big and can live for quite some time in a 29 gallon. My yearling stinkpot is living in a rubbermaid tub at the moment. The great thing about tubs vs. aquariums is that they're so cheap! You can upgrade the sizes of the tubs as the turtle grows. Plus they're easy to clean and light so you can take them outdoors to hose them out.

Texas yellow mud turtles are pretty cool. Small painteds might work in a 55. Spotteds if you can legally get them and hopefully breed them. How about a male spiny softie? Hope Im helping. :)

Anyone know how big maps get? I saw a pair at the NARBC this weekend and they were like large painted size. But those things have HUGE feet and TEENY heads! Omg it was the funniest thing.

Texas, Cagle's, Ringed, Yellow-blotched and Black-knobbed Map Turtles all stay small; the females of these species don't really get past 8 inches. The males of these species get between 4 and 6 inches long. If you got a male map turtle from this list, you could possibly keep it in a 29 gallon. But of course bigger is better.

i though about maps and wanted a yellow blotched but they are federally protected apparently i found out...i am considering maps as well...i think a stinkpot in a 29 gal is adequate for life but i was also wanting a reeves and if i can get a male reeves from what i have read i think a 55gal can house a male reeves for life...i cant make up my mind and it sucks cause i also dont know if i am going to have a 29 to house or a 55gal to house...ill look into those maps you suggested other then the yellow blotched...thanks vicouse...

by the way vicous is there anyway you can post some setup shots of your stinkpots enclosure...thanks all

I'd be happy to, as soon as I get some more batteries for my digital camera. They ran out yesterday when I was taking some pics of my Musk Turtle.

With all this talk about glass aquariums and other transparent turtle enclosures, I decided to try a little experiment. I just picked up a new Rubbermaid tub for my stinkpot on Monday. Only this time it's transparent, unlike his previous one. I want to see how he handles being able to see out. His other tubs were solid green in color. I only set it up yesterday but so far he seems to be acting normal.

my guess is the thinkmees of the plastice is going to blur his visibility of the outside world so he wont really be able to decifer what is there(i think no different then using a opaque tube honestly)

my westerns do well in a glass tanks so i think stinkpots would do well also in glass.
when it comes to boxturts and torts is when i push keepers to use tubs cause aquatice turts dont seem to enthusiastic about getting onto land instead of water where as box turts and torts are all about roaming land so they will try anythin to get to a "new world"

thansk vicous get thos batteries i am anxious to see the setup.

If you can find a male sawback (Black-knobbed) map, that'd be awesome! They retain a lot of their juvenile characteristics, which includes the saw blade carapace.
