thinking of adding a peacock bass to my tank thoughts ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
now im curous as to how large they actually get in home aquariums in real world experince not what the books and net say, what is there growth rate ?

how big do the bumps on the head of a males get ?

is there any other specifics needed to keep these guys ?

how big of a PB should i be looking at to purchase keeping in mind i dont want him to pass the other fish in the tank and decide he wants to eat everyone, would much rather him be smallish sized so that everyone has the chance to grow larger before he does to keep the peace somewhat... i mean that buy if fish grow up together that get along well in all of my case's they have, but yes there is the exception and i understand it as well..

any help would be great thanks rob
Mono's, kelberi's, Guyana Ocells, pleiazona's and negro's are the "smallest" sp of bass on the market now growing to 24'' or so. The growth rate of these fish are 12-14'' in the first year (if bought at 2''-3'').

Depending on the bass would depend on how big the hump would grow. I think mono's produce the biggest hump.

Any tankmates work as long as the other fish cant fit into the mouth of the bass. Given you have two alright size oscars, a 12-14'' bass would be the size I would recommend that you buy.

hmmmm, so maybe toss the peacock bass on the back burner till i find a 300gal plus tank then eh ... now outta courisity if or when i find a 300gal plus tank would my 2 fx5's be enough to filter out the tank and keep it at par where it should be ? with a pair of my oscar and a PB ? as i would rather not have a open water system like a sump under the tank as i have little kids constantly at my house always running around here that would defintly get there hands in it ! so something along the line of 7ft long by 3ft wide and 24inchs high min then ?

any help with this would be great :)

7 x 3 x 2 would be a nice setup. I have my larger ones in a 8 x 3 x 2. As its already been stated 180 gal is bare minimum. If you are serious about getting some, you mentioned you have a 75 gallon. Get 3+ (no tems, pinima, azuls) and grow them out in there and eventually upgrade to a bigger tank, id go no less than 72 x 30 x 24 (~220).

well right now i have a 75g as well as a 130g... but onc ei find a tank 300plus i would sell off the 130g i have here to regain some of the cost... and iw ouldnt bother to get any PB until i had the tank here for them to house em properly otherwise i could get into a situation where oh crap i cant keep him anymore due to not having a big enough tank ya know so none will be bought until i get a huge ass tank lol
