Thinking of adding sand as substrate any input ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have this in my 220g and 100g. It does need a good rinse. My Shellies in the 100 do like to move it around.

Do u have pics of the sand in your tanks? What color is it and is it dense? Or its light and flies around easily?

If you follow the link to the thread "My fish room" you can see my 100g in the first picture and the 220g in the last picture of the first post.
Color: White
Dense: fairly, does compact if not stirred regularly
Weight: It is light enough that I have to be careful not to vac it up when poop cleaning but it does not loft in the tank under normal circulation

You can also see the 220g here as well:

Hello; You may already know about this but a caution about using sand. The fine sand can pack if you have a thick layer. Under the packed sand an anaerobic area can form. (Anaerobic = without oxygen) Bacteria that thrive in these zones can produce toxins.
Two ways to deal with this. One is to stir up the sand in a regular schedule. Another is to only have a thin layer of sand. Plenty of posts about this here you can search.
This is one reason I use the coarser gravels and not the finer sands.

I have read about the bacteria under the sand and creating gas like pockets of nasty stuff in The water it can be a issue and this was a concern being my tank is 8x2 and stand almost 6 ft tall not the eaiest to get in and clean but it’s is possible
