Thinking of building a bio tower. Need some help.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm confused here I guess.

I was under the impression that most bio towers had a drip plate. Therefore spreading the water out evenly regardless of GPH. If I was to design a bio tower for 500 gph and 5000 gph the only significant difference would be footprint and in turn drip plate surface area.

And if contact time is a huge deal why not take half the water running through it and just run it through the tower again?

That would be one HIGH head pump. If it's 16" OD pipe and 6' tall that's alot of head pressure. I would have to do some math to do it like that. and see how big of a pump I would need

How tall is your tank? Most of mine have 5 foot of head. You're allready that high what's another foot? Most decent pumps will pump over 10.

Still curious as to what you plan on stocking.

There was some research several years ago in Japan with wet/dry's (or bio-towers). When the tower had a 1:7 width to heigth ratio or taller, there was a significant nitrate consumption.

So the tower must be 7 times taller than it is wide? Is this for a cylindrical one? What if you have a rectangle? Use longer sides?

hey koop good thread i have been looking into a filter for a new tank and i am thinking of using a bio reactor. there is a recent thread here on this filter. suppose to be very effective and needs little space.

How bout a link John!!!

koop171, I forgot to mention the pipe. Look for a commercial plumber and wastewater contractor in your area, they may have the odd piece of PVC you can pick up cheap for cash. I've picked up scrap 4' & 6' 6"-16" pieces from new subdivision and mall construction free.

I think the 55 gallon drums will be to large. I think that I should be looking at 16"OD at the most.
Gotcha, Thought I would throw it out there.

Unless the last pic can stand on end or atleast a great angle, it's a sump not a bio-tower. Should still work well because of it's size.

Dr Joe
Hard to tell from only one pic, but its not a sump. The water comes out a 5' long spraybar and flows down through the media without stopping to a spillway into the pond. Its built inside a bar, long, tall and narrow.

Ok, a single cell Bakki shower then .
