i have a 55 gallon tank that i have my fresh water fish in now i will be selling off all these fish and putting my 90 gallon in its place and starting the SW build.

my Q will my 55 make a good sump or do i need the depth/width (front to back) of the 40 breeder???

either way doesnt matter i have the 55 and i have access to a 40 breeder but as i read diff. places they say that the bigger the better witch is the same with FW just didnt know if the footprint was better on the 40 for a sump

The 55 gallon is fine and will work well while giving you plenty of space; the 40 breeder was just a suggested minimum.

trying to find a decent protein skimmer and good choices that wont break the bank??? i would like a in sump skimmer. there is a bunch out there but not sure where to begin.

Or you could go with a Coralife Super Skimmer 125 for about 115 dollars. All three work very well

And you do not want to go the cheap route on your skimmer. This will be one of the most important pieces to the build.
