Thinking of getting a "freshwater" eel

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well things are sounding good spontaneous.

+1 to what nonstop just said. (I rely on him for the long detailed posts that I now tire of making.)

:D

I'm just so anxious lol. I want the fish NOW but I am going to wait... I went to the LFS and they gave me a little info about the eels and water. I had them test my water and the levels were pretty much the same as my test trips so I'm on the right track. He did say my salinity is a little high for brackish though so when I do a water change I won't add salt this time as to bring it down a hair. Told me to do the water change and come back in a week to test the water and see where its at. I don't like this waiting thing. I'm so impatient! haha Thanks so much guys =]

Dont do an h2o change until your tank is cycled...this could prevent it from cycling properly.

That being said you sound like you are on track.

One last thing is that unless you are doing a very small h2o change in a 20g tank, doing a h2o change without adding salt will likely make your salinity too low.

My .02 still keeping thoughts positive about this project.

I only did a small change of "10%" which it was probably less lol and my salinity is at 1.011 right now. They gave me a live bacteria aditive to use to help jump start my cycling. Would this be good for my tank? At least to establish bacteria growth?

I have no experience using any of those products.

Salinity is good if it matches the tank he is in now, and is proper for the species, both of which I do not know.

Well, they have him in fresh water actually. They said the supplier keeps them in fresh and so they keep them in fresh. They are a brackish water fish though so uhhgg.. I wish I didn't use this bacteria crap... Makes my room smell like someone serioiusly has the wrotten egg farts.... My dad walked in and was like WTH? someone take a dump in here? haha The guy lied when he said it only smells bad for 10 minutes... PUKE

Yea, I have never used it.

Dont think it should have done that though.

Guess it sounds like we will have to gradually work his salinity up to where it should be.

Do you have a securely fitting top to this aquarium? Eels will find any, and all ways out of an aquarium.

I do have a securely fitting lid and I'll probably end up putting something heavy on top to just in case. I did a small water change today, I don't do a big one as to not remove a lot of bacteria. I didn't check to see what the salinity was at but this will slowly lower it. I'll go in Sunday and have my water tested and if it's good I *might* get the eel. Just depends. I'm just glad the tank doesn't make my room smell bad anymore LOL

You are probably going to have to re-cycle now that your tank is going to be freshwater again...

FW bacteria are different from SW bacteria and BW bacteria...or at the very least, they need some adjustment time in between these.

I would make sure that you had a FULL cycle at a FW salinity level, and then that you slowly (very slowly) add salt after the eel is introduced in the form of h2o changes to insure that you do not kill off your bacteria.

Mk... One question, the gentleman had mentioned something about how eel's in brackish water are used to going from straight FW to brackish from entering the lagoons and tribruaries and such. I'm not too sure. I'll ask the guy at the LFS that has the eel and see how most people do it. We'll see, I'm not in a hurry, I got a $3 raise at work today haha. Makes things eaier now that I know I can afford it all!
