The growth of Silurus glanis is highly dependent on the climate. For this reason they stay very small in Great Britain, and you will hardly ever see one much over 1,5m. In Germany the climate is better, but even here lengths of more than 2m are true sensations and very rare. In southern France and Italy or Spain the climate is much warmer, especially because the winter is milder, and they will much more regularly reach lengths of more than 2m. Many people are much too enthusiastic about the wels catfish and think they will regularly reach lengths of well over 2m or even much more. The biggest one I have ever seen was one which was caught where I live (the inofficial german record specimen). It was 2,47m and weighed 89kg. This is very very rare. Even in the italian Po Delta you only rarely see a specimen which is longer (but they are often stockier and weigh more than those from colder climates). The actual world record (and not the big fish stories which you can often hear) was a monstrous specimen from Italy which was 2,78m and weighed 144kg. This are really highly abnormal dates and much over average. I contacted the taxidermist which worked on it, but sadly they did not know how old it was.
If you have a pond big enough, a wels catfish is surely a nice fish, but the water has to be clear enough. If I will ever have a pond big enough I would buy a golden or white wels, because they are much better to see.
