so.... i really know nothing at all about these fish. i see a lot of ppl that keep aro's in a 125 and up. i have a 120, picking up another 125 this weekend and within the next yr my 180-220 prject should be finished. im a huge fan of gars. i have an alligator gar now, but will be replaced by 2 floridas. can you guys just let me know the basics of care, tankmates and size and even if my 125 would house them (if for some reason my bigger tank doesnt get finished). thanks for all your help

first things first " i know nothing at all" is not where you want to start, first learn everything you can and then go ahead with the purchase. it will fit into your 120 for now but you should look into a bigger tank.

Don't get one until you have the larger tank, a 125 will not be large enough to house it for life (and many poeple on here would say that a 220 is too small, but IMO, a standard 180g is the bare minimum for an arowana)

Well they are beautiful fish and peaceful to watch except at feeding time :) but they do get large so you will need a bigger tank then the 120 eventually. Im new to keeping arowanas also but i love mine. they do good with bichirs i have my 7" silver with a ornate bichir. I plan on adding a gar and african arowana and some other fish later on. They need a variety of foods for full colouration and good health. Right now i feed mine FD blood worms, plankton , hikari sticks and market shrimp. Dont add any tank mates that are aggressive till the arow reaches 11"+ because baby arows are sensitive. Ive seen them with many types of fish from chichlids to knifes to gars ,cichla.. it depennds on what you like and your tank size. But there is much more about these fish but someone with much more experience will comment soon and tell you more details with more experience.

Good Luck :)

Well they are really fast growers, I can tell you that much. I had two 18"+ silvers that my boyfriend and I raised from fry that started out in a 55gal. Outgrew that in a couple of moths and then moved to a 150gal. They started to out grow that when they were about a year old. Then they were in a 250gal and were still growing when we had a power outage that wiped out a lot of our fish including the arows. In captivity they get 3-4ft long if given a big enough tank. An ideal tank would be one that is wide and long because they are a really long fish and need to be able to turn around comfortably. That is when you know you need to upgrade, when they are almost as long as the width of the tank. Height isn't that much of a big deal in my opinion because they mostly stay at the top of the tank anyways. They are jumpers so you need to have a secure lid at all times. From my experience they were fine with any tank mates that were too big to fit in their mouth (I had mine with pbass, bichirs, gars, catfish, oscars when they were little) The only time I saw them aggressive to another was when I added another arowana. But they eventually got over it as they established territory. Mine ate feeders, aro pellets, tilapia, shrimp and my boyfriend and his buddies got them to eat a couple mice but I do not think that is a good idea. Hope some of my info helps. Feel free to ask any questions. I am no expert but am only talking from my personal experience.
