hey guys, just trying to get some response here. i have a 55g with african cichlids that i want to get rid of and move on to something else. the tank has been up for a year so its well established and i have a rena xp3 on it (so it has a good bit of media but not the greatest turnover rate) which i can add an ac110 if needed. i also have 2 blood red parrots that i tried in my bigger tank that didnt work so theyre in a 10g spare tank now. at my lfs they have about a 4-5" fh. im guessing its a zz ( i can get some pics if need be tomorrow night) for $30. to describe it its silver with pretty red colors (that may not help much i know) so i guess i just wanted to get some input from the experts here. how big does a fh grow? will it work with parrots (4") or is that overstocked? ive been keeping fish for quite some time now, and never was interested in any hybrid til recently. so let me know what you guys think? and any advice would be great too. btw, i read in the stickies but didnt find a whole lot on sizes.

IMO,a FH needs a 75 gallon by itself. They will typically grow to at least 12".

nope, a 55g is more than enough for FH...
Flowerhorn Cichlids are usually kept at a water temperature of 80–85 °F, and a pH of 7.4–8.0. They require a large tank (minimum of 50 gallons) to grow. Being aggressive and territorial, two or more flowerhorns are usually not kept together, but the tank housing them can be divided up with acrylic dividers or egg crates.

@heyall...feel free to read this site... to get your all answer..:)

btw, the flowerhorn can leave healthy in 35g but you need a massive 50% WC, twice a week will be preferred...

Yea but thats the minimum. Theres stories fo FH that got to 16" because they live in 100+ gallon aquariums by there selves. they should reach there maximum potential with a large tank and other factors too.

yup i heard that too, but some other gossip, its been defend for the strain or genes, even you put your flowerhorn into a giant tank, but the gene of your flowerhorn can only reach at 12 to 14, then its never been reach the maximum 16...

The theory about FH needing 75g itself is not quite true. I see an 8 years old FH living in a 50 gal just fine. Very active and healthy. 75g or more is only if you really want your FH to grow out to its maximum it can be. But one problem with getting big tanks for FH if your really into the FH hobby. You will want more and more FH as you gain more experience into the FH hobby. With so many strains out there, and so many good looking ones out there. Best to stock up short tank that are wide enough for an adult FH to live in for at least 5 year. Why short and wide? I have a friend that is so crazy into FH, he own 15 adult FH and 3 juvy currently. Big tank is only necessary for breeding. But if your not planning to dive deep into the FH hobby, you can do it with big tanks. But just beware of how beautiful and how many strains of FH out there that will want you to start stocking them up as a collection. :D

+1 :iagree:

FH CAN live with BP. That is what I have my FH with. It all depends on the temperment of the fish though. But lots of people keep them with BP. I have them in a 75 gallon tank. I want my FH to get big.

As far as I know and what I see. Yes some FH can live with a BP. But some cases, FH doesn't seem to be so forgiving. It wants the tank to itself.

Yep, that's true, just depends on the temperment of the fish.
