thinking of getting into flowerhorns

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A lot of theories about putting a FH with a BP is that this will enhance the FH to bring out its color much more. As the dominant fish in the tank is always the most beautiful(in the FH world). So a FH knowingly that he/she is dominating the tank, it is suppose to cause it to keep its color much brighter and more vibrant.
I see a lot of FH hobbyist keep FH with BP quite often unless they are too aggressive to be done. I will have to test this theory out for myself some day...

^^ I could see that theory being true. Well my FH is much smaller then my BP so only time will tell. Im sure once he gets big he will be the dominant fish. If he gets to aggressive I will have to split them up.

wow thanks for all the great replies guys. i think i might go grab the fh at my lfs this weekend. as for size, it will start off in a 55g and ill see how it goes. i have a 120 and 125 (being refinished) for it to go to.

i heard that black background and gravel are bad. the 55g has white gravel with no background? any thoughts?

what about aquascaping? im gonna try it with 2 red parrots, should i have some hiding spots?

oh, thoughts on bottom feeders/plecos please

again, thanks a million!

A male FH raised on its own will always be dominant, and in most cases will show its full potential as it matures, even when kept alone. If one wants to get the fish fired up at an early age, using mirrors to agitate the fish will result in the same effect as keeping it with a BP.

75 Gallon... If your getting a flowerhorn for the "right" reason then a 75 is ideal. People who just want to keep a flowerhorn will tell you anything from a 40long to a 55 is ok. In my experience the size difference always helps. I "guess" a flowerhorn can be healty in a 50, but to get the max potential I say 75 gallons.

Well Im at work and can access photobucket, so I will post the proof after I get of. Trust me you will understand what I mean.

Edit - Gravel and Background
As far as backgrounds go "Black is good for certain faders", if the Flowerhorn is not a fader blue is the preferred color. I believe any bright color will work.

As far as gravel goes, white is not good. Try a natural if you must use gravel. Multi-color works also.

My setups include:
Blue backgrounds
crushed coral for substrate (pH @ 7.2 - 7.7)
Air pump connected to sponge filters for extra air and filtration.

I currently own 6 flowerhorns. I have owned over 30 during my time.

thanks alot musha. btw i live right up the road from ya around hagerstown, md. i wanna keep a flowerhorn in right conditions and i as stated before i have some other options in the future. you say if you "must" use gravel, shuoldi use sand or go barebottom (cuz i hate barebottom). would sand work better? and if so what colors?

Dont make me a liar when it comes to sand bro, I have never used it. As I stated I use bare bottom and crushed coral. There is absolutely nothing wrong with gravel, but I do 2 water changes per week, thats hell with gravel. Here is one of my pairs.

Unless you have numerous tanks to contend with, gravel is not an issue as long as the depth of the substrate is minimal. I use just enough to barely cover the bottom, in 300+ gallons worth of FH tanks.

I also use black backgrounds. You can read my comments about black backgrounds on the last page of the following link.

ok musha, sorry about the gravel question i read over that in your previous post. no offense, i dont like the looks of the barebottom tank. i do biweekly waterchanges now with sand bottom. what would be the best color substrate to use?

oh and i may get murdered for this, but in both your videos, i liked the fish with smaller hump (or i think its called kok) sorry again, ill take the beating if its bad
