Thinking of going Triggers - little advice needed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm not familiar with that Fijian clown but I remember how some damsels can be real PITAs in a tank.

My triggers are kept in a 6.500 litre/ hour turnover plus a 12.000 litre / hour circulation pump...

Triggers are not known for jumping.

I would go Niger, clown and rhinecanthus, one of each, at the same time and at the same size....

I like that combo - getting them all at the same time and size will be tricky

Add the clown last...

You will heve to watch the Niger, in that case...it willbe from him that the agression comes when the last one enters

Build a net box and hang it in the tank....with enough space to have them in the tank without a problme from the Angel and watch how things develop

I concur with a lot of what's said here. Clown triggers are often very mean, but I have seen exceptions. I totally agree with the undulated triggers being a risky choice, and nigers being safer.

HOWEVER,

When you're dealing with smart fish they tend to have a lot more complex behavior and individual personality (e.g. triggers, cichlids, angels). Triggers are one of the smartest families of fishes (they have a highly developed telencephalon). When someone asks me if a trigger will work in their tank I tell them the same thing I tell people who want to add a cichlid to their cichlid community, or an angel to their coral tank: It might work, but I can't guarantee anything because it depends on the individual. I don't know the temperament of the fish you want to buy or the other fish you have, so I'd recommend trying a safer trigger, and if it doesn't work out then return it to the store.

Could not agree more with your statement.

A safer trigger, however, like a member of the Xanthicthys family, would be riskier with the angel, i Think.

But you are right. They all are different persons. Hence the joy of keeping them.
