Thinking of picking up a Red Devil and I have some questions.

my female is the same size as the male and her hump is almost larger it seems so the hump thing doesnt work worth poop

and the whole pointed fins thing is out too, you have to vent them, the males junk looks more like a spike
and the females tube looks more like a tubeor a forward facing j almost right before spawning,

if your after mean and nasty fish then they should do the trick just be forewarned the males will...WILL kill off there females after spawning my large male just murdered my female when i was away for 2 days i figured they would spawn again and pull him when i got home and he literally destroyed her so buckle up or buy a couple more tanks for when it goes bad.

Females are just as likely to grow a nuchal hump and have long pointy fins as males. The only way to accurately sex these guys is to vent them.

Thanks Macframalama, don't worry about the mantis love Red Devils make, I only have one. Although Jags have been known to like it rough if they were to cross. I just picked it up to break up the two males I currently have in the tank who had nothing better to do than splash water over my floor playing tough guy with each other. Probably won't cross, besides the Jag my other fish is a sterile Dempsey.
