Oscar Tummy
My Oscar is at the age where they tend to break things and I'm too chicken to build a sump for the heaters. I am wondering if I can just put a rubber ring or cap over the hot end of the heaters so he can't smack them into the tank. What kind of rubber or other material is okay for such purposes?

To make it clear, I have two heaters in the tank, both installed the standard suction cup way. He hasn't shown interest in them yet, but why wait?

Thanks for the lead, but that's a bit expensive. I'm trying to keep it around two or three dollars. There is actually no fish money in the budget, so I get to take a scolding for every dollar I spend on my fish....

Now, those cages are pretty intricate things. I like simplicity, and I'm pretty sure there has to be a good material for this purpose. Maybe a special hard-rubber intended for kitchen use? Oh! Silicone would work, wouldn't it? How hot can silicone get?

edit: Looks like it can get very hot and be okay. Now I've just got to cast a couple of rings. Awesome!

Could always just use some PVC w/ a bunch of holes drilled in it... might look tacky depending how you do it though.

Drilled PVC works great.

If you have the PVC you can spend the money on some black krylon fusion paint to make it look nicer.

If youre really not concerned with how it looks, wrap a couple of rubber bands around the end that youre worried about banging into the glass.

PVC sounds promising. So I'd rig it up to make no actual contact with the heater glass? Exactly what are we considering here?
It will only look tacky until the black beard algae claims it...or can algae grow even on PVC?

I'd expect rubber bands to melt and leach toxins. Thanks, though.

Is PVC really safe with all of that stuff leaching out of it?
