So I thought I might be able to get away with both kribs and rams in a 75, nah murder krib killed 4 rams (and I'm kinda poor) inside 2 weeks, so fine, murder krib make more of you, but you've killed 3 females, thought you and the last one would be fine, you were attached at the hip for a month, and then well yeah, asexual murder krib, took some danios and sword tails too (but less).
Kinda want to try out convicts (murder is okay w/ me if you give me some nice parenting to watch and keep the population up)
....but I have 5 oto cats the wife loves, and the danios I cycled with are still doing good, some pretty wild form green swordtails...
So:
Any ideas on fish that have neat parental behaviours that would get along in there? It'll be a month or two before I can afford more than 10-20$ Might be able to invest a couple hundred again in September.
Oh yeah, and preferably plant safe, or at least dangly root safe.

Sure that’s a krib lol? They are mean when breeding but this seems even worse than anything I’ve heard!
Convict or it’s relatives are probably a good bet and should be plant safe. I can’t imagine small zebra danios lasting long though (otos should work depending on how many hiding spots there are).

Yep, sure looks like a good ol' LFS Pulcher. Handsome boy, doesn't strike right away w/ other kribs or the rams, waits till everyone thinks it's going to work, charming, great dancer, no more chasing - and then murder.
With the others he only attacks if they pause in front of whatever cave he's claimed this week. Then he like to get a hold of the belly - takes them to the surface and they either get away or he holds on and shakes them till it's done.
Hopefully a convict pair could stand up to him.

There are some neat locally bread convict hybrids about an hour away that look like convicts but taller and with more contrast between the light and dark bits, and sold only a little smaller than the krib. other than that it's the mixed imported convict/GT/fire mouth/Jack dempsy fry tanks.
Otos have lots of options, but they don't hide, normally on glass or plants, they just don't pause in front of the krib.

I'm enjoying my new colony of cryptoheros cutteri. Stark black and white breeding dress, get more females than males. Usually readily available. Females do a funny little dance for the males when courting. If not, colony of convicts also works, get a bunch of smallish ones (preferably wild types with locales on them from Ken Davis or something). They also have unique behaviors and ironically don't kill eachother as much when they have more neighbors than territory to share. Herotilapia or thorichthys are also nice and fun in groups. Significantly less aggressive than the former two.

Ooo, those do look nice, love high contrast stripes, think they might not like my soft acidic water too much. I've thought about ordering online, might be able to afford a half dozen fish and shipping and weekday off in September, but it would be a risk and a hundo for a re-ship would take another month or two, and f that right now.
Had some thorichthys five to ten years back in this 75, was a pretty good tank. The herotilapia are interesting, I've seen them local before - though normally only one or two at a time and not looking too hot but might be able to get the shop to order those for me. How fussy are they to breed?

Herotilapia will breed like convicts once settled. Mine has only laid eggs once, but there is no male and lots of competition.
In stores as juvies the rainbow cichlids (herotilapia) just look okay, it takes a few months to really color up.

She plays nice with my kribs.

Not too hard, they lay a lot of eggs though.

I don’t understand the use of the term ‘asexual’ in this thread.
Likely because it refuses to breed, more the "modern" definition
