Thinking of starting a pond.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've been thinking about doing this for a bit now too. I haven't quite figured the filtration yet, I suppose some kind of diy wet/dry and a pond pump. The thing I'm worried about is the temp in the winter. What I'm thinking about doing is partially burying it as you mentioned, getting a solar blanket to put on it at least on cold nights (it gets in the 40s at night for a few months, maybe down to freezing 10 nights out of the year). I'm also playing with the idea of using the included pool pump along with a grid of black pvc pipe or other hose to utilize solar heat in winter. If the temps aren't going to work out then I'll have to go with natives (would be cool to have a gar).

Here's something else to think about...wouldn't it be cool to set one of these up and swim in it with a mask & snorkel? Talk about up close & personal :)

Check with your agricultural extension office, they can can give you specifics on local temps (and ground temps too).

Some may have suggestions on native fish.

Game fish can only be kept during the season and you must have a valid freshwater fishing license during this time.

The included pool pump is not for 24/7 useage and will die quickly if used as such (they're only a catridge with a fountain pump attached in a housing at best).
